Children are as susceptible to trauma in their spines as adults are. Dr. Nasly Lopez's youngest patient was a mere 2 hours old. The mother of this baby had been a patient of Dr. Lopez's for a very long time and was adjusted all through her pregnancy.
The mother was aware that at times during a doctor-assisted delivery, undue pressure is placed on the baby's neck and head. This pressure can many times create a misalignment in the very delicate neck of a newborn. Heidi, the mom, wanted to make sure that her baby's neck was perfectly aligned given the nature of her birth. She called Dr. Lopez as soon as the baby was born and Dr. Lopez rushed over to check the baby. This procedure took all of one minute and was as gentle as a finger touch. It is so quick and easy given the fact that a baby's neck is mostly cartilage and a minimal amount of pressure is needed to make a correction. As a matter of fact the baby was sleeping when the correction was made and the baby remained asleep during the whole thing.
How old does a child need to be before he/she is treated? Children should be checked right after birth, because of the potentially damaging effects of the actual birthing process. Even the "easiest" births are somewhat traumatic to the infant and can result in damage to the spine.
Children who have their spines checked at an early age suffer less from the common ailments found in adults such as headaches, low back pain, or shoulder pain.
Chiropractic studies show that many children who suffer with colic, ear infections, and even asthma have spinal subluxations or misalignments that impede the natural functioning of the nervous system. Early detection and correction of subluxations can prevent layers of damage from occurring in the nervous system. Accumulated damage could have lifelong consequences.
The premise of chiropractic is the same with children as it is for adults. However, the way in which the adjustment is made is very different for children.
Children require a different kind of technique as well as a significantly decreased amount of pressure. Children do not have fully ossified (hardened) bones; therefore the pressure that is required to make a correction is minimal and the correction is longer lasting because they grow straighter.
On very young children, the adjustment is as light as a finger touch. As a member of the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association, Dr. Lopez has taken post-graduate classes on specific techniques for children, infants and pregnant mothers, to enhance her skills in this field.
